There is a lot going on in your life and you are slowly moving into adulthood. Your personality is changing, and so are your preferences. These huge transformations can have a significant impact on your relationship with your parents. Keep reading to gain a better understanding of the situation.

In adolescence, you go through a lot of changes in a very short time. You’re building your “new me” and shaping your personality. ❓ Your tastes, ideas, and ways of seeing and doing things change. 🤔 Your parents are also changing and adapting, but more gradually. They’re cautious and they set limits for you because they want to protect you.

This is a time when it’s more difficult for you to understand each other: you often have to take time to talk 💬, with each other, get to know each other all over again, and show a lot of openness to differences.

Your parents may find it hard to understand that you’ve changed: you’re no longer the child you were a few years ago. They’re still the ones who make the decisions at home but they can’t control your life as much as they used to or make decisions for you. They need to learn to loosen their grip on some issues, while still keeping you safe.

You can’t change or control 🎛️ your parents, but you can tell them 🔓 🔦 what you feel, what you want, what you like. Tell them about your plans in advance to give them time to think, react, and adapt. Be honest and respectful. Over time, they’ll learn to trust you more and more. If things don’t improve, talk with a counsellor at your school or contact Tel-jeunes!
