There are numerous factors that may explain why a person has an eating disorder. That means that there isn’t one single reason but a combination of reasons that drive a person to develop an eating disorder. Here are some factors that can cause an eating disorder.
Individual risk factors
- You have certain personality traits, such as being a perfectionist, rigid, or impulsive.
- You have low self-esteem.
- You try to control your emotions as much as possible; you don’t allow yourself to feel them.
- You find it hard to express your emotions and assert yourself.
- You find other people’s opinions very important; you don’t want to disappoint them and you can’t say no to them.
Family and social risk factors
- You have a particularly difficult relationship with your family members.
- You feel pressure to perform well (at school, in sports, etc.) and be perfect.
- You feel like you don’t control your own life.
Pressure related to weight, food, and appearance
- Your family or your friends attach a lot of importance to looks.
- Your friends or relatives constantly talk about how dissatisfied they are with their weight or their body.
- The people you know are obsessed with food. For example, your parents are constantly on a diet.
- You’re teased because of your weight or bullied because of your looks.
- You have certain beliefs about weight and health.
Environmental risk factors
You’ve experienced one or more stressful or traumatic events (death, separation, sexual or physical assault, neglect, moving house, transferring from high school to CEGEP, starting university, etc.).

If you have an eating disorder, you need to try to find out what’s going on inside of you. Eating disorders appear when something’s wrong, when you can’t manage difficult emotions, or to overcome a problem or meet a need. Once you’ve understood why you have an eating disorder, it will be easier for you to find healthy ways of handling the challenges of life. You need to take care of yourself!
