We all want to be happy. But happiness doesn’t mean being happy every second of every day. The happiness trap means thinking that it’s abnormal to feel unhappy at any time.
Remember these 3 important things:
- It’s unrealistic to try to never experience difficult emotions or situations. If you set this kind of impossible expectation, you’re putting a lot of pressure on yourself to feel good all the time, and in the end that might… make you unhappy!
- Life is full of situations that make us feel emotions. Some are pleasant, others definitely aren’t. It’s normal – and important! – to experience disappointments, sadness, challenges, grief, failures… Those are often what make us grow and evolve!
- Do the things that are important to you anyway! When a difficult emotion or situation arises, we can learn to welcome it without letting it distance us from what is important to us. For example, if you really want to take swimming lessons, but you’re embarrassed or ashamed of your body, welcome what you feel, accept the situation, and get up your courage!
Every cloud has a silver lining! It’s worth learning how to get through hard times since your happiness is waiting for you on the other side!
